Stand + Stare

Stand + Stare is run by Lucy and Barney Heywood.

We’re a bit of a family firm, literally and metaphorically. As well as our close partnership as co-artistic directors and brother and sister, Ali, our Mum, often collaborates with us as costumier and/or producer. Her ethos, which we have adopted whole-heartedly, is that everything works if people are well fed, so, whatever the project, big or small, with Stand + Stare you’re never too far from the next cake or bowl of homemade soup.

The company was founded in 2009 after our first show, Stand & Stare, a large site-specific show in a neglected old boys club. Originally, we were part of a group of seven, but as the company grew the two of us moved into a more central role. Stand + Stare became a not-for-profit limited company in Jan 2011, and, although we are the driving force, we still feel that the term collective is relevant to the collaborative way in which we work.

We work with people from a range of disciplines including technologists, academics, archivists and even cheesemakers. Always seeking to challenge convention and to tell a good story, we create automated experiences, often based on archive material, and immersive performances where our audiences feel stimulated by the ideas, but not intimidated by the form. Our work is characterized by a sense of warmth and nostalgia with particular attention given to the design.

We make work for theatres, festivals, commercial clients, media agencies, museums, libraries and universities. We also run workshops and give lectures based on our projects and experience.

Our office/studio is at The Parlour in central Bristol, which we share with lots of other performance people, thanks to Bristol City Council, and we’re also resident artists at Bristol’s Pervasive Media Studio, just down the road.

We are very grateful to be supported by a wide range of brilliant people and organisations including Arts Council England, Pervasive Media Studio, Ferment at Bristol Old Vic, Tobacco Factory Theatre, Parabola Arts Centre, The Roses TheatreCreate Gloucestershire, Theatre Bristol, Theatre Gloucestershire, Stroud Valley Arts, Mayfest, Bristol City Council and Capacity Bristol. Our clients include The Royal Shakespeare Company, Random House, Birmingham REPPan Macmillan, MOSITOAST, Santa & Cole, Alistair Sawday, Hobbs House Bakery and Millar Howard Architects.
